UK Spouse / Partner Visa Financial Requirement Based on Savings, Investment and Pension Income
If you’re applying for a UK spouse or partner visa, you’ll need to show that you meet a financial requirement set by the UK government. These financial requirements can be met in various ways other than salaried employment/self-employment. These in accordance with Home Office guidance include saving, investment, and pension income.
To meet the financial requirement my cash savings you or your partner need to have at least £16,000 in savings, which is the minimum income tax threshold. This money can be held in a UK or foreign bank account and must have been saved for at least 6 months before the date of your visa application.
How to Calculate the Required Amount of Cash Savings
To calculate how much cash savings you need, you need to use this formula:
Income tax threshold + (General financial requirement x period of leave granted in years)
For example, if you’re applying for a 2.5-year visa, the required amount of cash savings will be:
£16,000 + (£18,600 x 2.5) = £62,500
Evidence of Cash Savings
When you apply for a UK spouse or partner visa, you’ll need to provide evidence of your cash savings. This includes:
- Personal bank statements from the last 6 months, showing the funds you’re relying on.
- A declaration from the account holder(s) about the source of the savings.
- The bank account must be regulated by an appropriate authority, and the funds must be immediately available for withdrawal.
Cash Gifts and Investment Income
You can also meet the financial requirement by using cash gifts or investment income. If you receive money as a gift, it must have been saved for at least 6 months and you must provide a signed declaration. If you have investment income, it must have been a source of income for some part of the 12-month period prior to your visa application. You’ll need to provide evidence of your investment income, such as a certificate of ownership and a portfolio report.
Pension Income
If you or your partner receive a state, occupational, or private pension, the gross annual income from this pension can be used to meet the financial requirement. You’ll need to provide official documentation of your pension entitlement and bank statements showing the pension income received in the last 12-month period.
